Communication Coach

The ReferEASE course was created by Nathalie Kleinschmit, an award-winning trainer and coach. Now based in Winnipeg, MB, Nathalie has personally trained over 20 000 people from over 100 countries in effective communication, intercultural relations, teamwork, and leading change.

ReferEASE was created as a response to the verbal abuse she witnessed sports officials receiving when her own children were in league sports. Nathalie had designed and delivered a comprehensive, worldwide training and culture change program for public transit systems that was recognized for its impact with awards in 5 countries. Working closely with Sport Manitoba, she adapted the contents to meet the needs of sports officials and piloted the first ReferEase in-person clinics in 2011.

Today, Sport Manitoba has the exclusive licence for the ReferEASE course in the province, for both the online module and for facilitated in-person clinics.

This online course for sports officials is aimed at empowering you to bring the ‘ease’ back into officiating. With ReferEASE, you'll work through situations of confidence, concern and conflict and, for each, share some tips and tools for interacting effectively with coaches, parents, and athletes. The online course balances theory with real-life experiences and tips from sports officials and experts. It includes:

  • Easy tips for creating a positive first impression,
  • Specific words to avoid when giving instructions… and the key phrases you can use to get things to go your way,
  • A closer look at “the brain on sports” and why people lose their cool,
  • A constructive approach for deflecting verbal abuse and threats,
  • Some strategies for taking a stand against racism on the ice, floor, or field,
  • Plus, proven tools that drive a positive environment of confidence for all!

This online course was developed for Sport Manitoba and the different sport organizations in the province. Contact your sports organization for access and for further in-person clinics to hone your communication skills for the game.
